About Our Honorees
Lyssy Hughes, Peggy and Dayton Ogden’s granddaughter, was 9 years old and enjoying the pool in Florida with her family prior to being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) later that day. Like most families, the dates and circumstances of her diagnosis, are permanently etched into all of their hearts.
Now, 4 years later, Lyssy is doing exceptionally well, and she has accepted how type 1 has impacted her life. During this period, her extended family has been right by her side. In addition to learning as much as possible about this disease, each family member wanted to know how they could help and make a difference.
Margaret and Iwan, Lyssy’s parents, have become active in our JDRF chapter. Margaret joined the Board of Directors and participates with her family at the JDRF One Walk. Iwan has developed a strong expertise in the technology strategies for managing T1D.
Lyssy’s Uncle Dayt and Aunt Laura, who live in Boston, have joined the New England Chapter and have been aggressively raising funds for JDRF.
As Lyssy’s grandparents, Peggy and Dayton have become laser focused on all things JDRF.
Peggy has spent many hours assisting the committee in preparation for this 2018 Gala. She has also networked extensively with a wide circle of friends and family to help them understand the nuances and complexities associated with T1D.
Dayton joined the executive committee of the International Board of Directors of JDRF. With his extensive background in CEO/Board recruiting and Leadership Advisory Services, he has been able to leverage many relationships to help JDRF.
The impact that this family has had in such a short time is remarkable. A family that began a struggle in a swimming pool in Florida has now all jumped in with both feet to do whatever it takes to find a cure for this disease.
